While walking along the bay with my dog, we passed by another woman with her dog. She made a cute comment about our dogs being cousins since they were both yellow labs. Later I began wondering...
if Scout ever came across one of her litter mates, would she somehow be able to sense that, especially all these years later? Dogs have such a powerful sense of smell, maybe they do have a way of detecting that.
We got our dog when she was 7 weeks old from a woman who lived about an hour drive northeast of San Diego. The small litter was made up of 3 females and 1 male, and sadly, one of the females drowned in the way-too-deep water bucket. We got the pick of the litter and chose our little Scouty girl. We don't know who chose the other dogs and where they ended up. But if Scout ever came face to face with one (or nose to rear!), I just wonder if they could tell they were siblings from any distinct smells they may have?
I know of a guy who adopted a puppy from a litter at the humane society. He has kept in contact with the people that adopted the other puppies from that same litter. Once a year they all get together on the dog's birthday's and let the siblings play together and eat dog cake. Isn't that a great idea?

That is a really interesting question. I wonder if she would know her siblings. We are hoping to get a dog in the next month. I am having a hard time deciding between a shelter dog or going to a breeder.
Betsy-
How exciting! That is a difficult decision. We've always believed that when buying a dog from a breeder you have a much better idea of what to expect as far as temperament and basic behaviors. But, I do know many people who have ended up with great dogs that they got from the shelter.
It's really sad to see how some people don't take the time to train their dogs or exercise them regularly, so they end up with a naughty, barking, digging dog, and then they get rid of them, taking them to the pound when it wasn't even the dogs fault.
I wish you guys all the best in your search. What kind are you looking for?
I want a labradoodle. I love labs, but remember how much my mother's dog shed. I am still doing the whole shelter/breeder debate.
Betsy-
Yes, our lab sheds so much. I don't know anything about Standard Poodles, but Labradoodles look so adorable. The temperament of a lab mixed with a non-shedding poodle sounds like a perfect mix.

Betsy, be very careful, the rumor that "labradoodles" don't shed is a myth. Some take on the lab side, and some the poodle side, and it's next to impossible to predict which one the pup will take. Honestly, since it is a mix, you'd probably do better going to a shelter or a rescue org. to get one, and, you'd save a lot of money.
Brenda, that's a good question. I do know that Zoe remembered the people we got her from after being with us for over 6 months and not seeing them in that time. 7 years is a long time though..

Oh, thanks for the info about the possibility of Labradoodles shedding. I didn't know that.
